Nebraska Panhandle’s 4,700 farms contribute nearly $2 billion in annual commodity sales, yet farmers here report the lowest average net income among the state’s regions.

Nearly half of farms lost money in 2022, and much of what’s earned exits the region through external input costs. Local consumers spend $301 million on food each year—but almost none of that reaches Panhandle farms directly.

The Local Farm & Food Economy regional report for Panhandle Nebraska covers Banner, Box Butte, Cheyenne, Dawes, Deuel, Garden, Kimball, Morrill, Scotts Bluff, Sheridan, and Sioux counties.

The report points to an opportunity to invest in local food infrastructure to better connect producers and residents and retain more value within the region.

This regional report was written by Ken Meter of Crossroads Resource Center and published for the Center for Rural Affairs and Heartland Regional Food Business Center.
